Ebook About Classroom management is traditionally a matter of encouraging good behavior and discouraging bad by doling out rewards and punishments. But studies show that when educators empower students to address and correct misbehavior among themselves, positive results are longer lasting and more wide reaching. In Better Than Carrots or Sticks, longtime educators and best-selling authors Dominique Smith, Douglas Fisher, and Nancy Frey provide a practical blueprint for creating a cooperative and respectful classroom climate in which students and teachers work through behavioral issues together. After a comprehensive overview of the roots of the restorative practices movement in schools, the authors explain how to * Establish procedures and expectations for student behavior that encourage the development of positive interpersonal skills; * Develop a nonconfrontational rapport with even the most challenging students; and * Implement conflict resolution strategies that prioritize relationship building and mutual understanding over finger-pointing and retribution.Rewards and punishments may help to maintain order in the short term, but they're at best superficially effective and at worst counterproductive. This book will prepare teachers at all levels to ensure that their classrooms are welcoming, enriching, and constructive environments built on collective respect and focused on student achievement.Book Better Than Carrots or Sticks: Restorative Practices for Positive Classroom Management Review :
I gave this 3 stars because it is difficult to get through some of the chapters. In my opinion, there's a little too much information about what's being in done classrooms that causes the issues. I got this book because I am looking for concrete ways to create a true classroom community through using restorative practices. I am already versed in what doesn't work, so I wish this book did more to provide information on restorative practices. This book is a quick, easy read, which is nice. There are a few helpful nuggets, but not really that much. If you can check it out from the library, borrow it, or get it at a thrift shop, it's worth the read because it's quick and you might find some gems. However, you shouldn't pay full price for it because there really isn't much of anything new in this book for an experienced educator (or even a newbie with some common sense). It basically boils down to building relationships with students, which we all know is important. Most of the book is anecdotes from the authors - not really very many clear strategies (and when describing some of the methods used, they mention more than once about utilizing a certified trainer). I was looking for tools for my toolbox - this book focuses more on telling you *why* you should have restorative tools in your toolbox and implies that your need a restorative trainer to lead some of the methods. In addition, the anecdotes are horribly cheesy and unrealistic for most circumstances; they come across as fake. For example, this comes from the anecdote about Cody, a high school junior who was caught smoking marijuana at school: "Cody admitted his transgression, apologized for the harm he had caused, and made a commitment to stay clean. He also told his mom that she could drug test him. 'I know that you want the best for me, even when I get any at you,' he said. 'You've handled this great, and I'm sorry that you had to deal with this.' He then asked if he could join after-school club 'because I get in trouble when I have too much free time.'" (p. 114) Another example about a middle school student who wore an inappropriate shirt to school stated that the student was overhead saying this to his friends: "Yeah, like, I coulda got in a lot of trouble because I made a bad choice,"..."But [the administrator] just told me again what the expectations are and then made sure I could live up to them. You gotta respect that. The rules are the rules, but you get another chance." (p. 81). These stories just seem to perfect and don't sound like what most students would say. The book felt like it was written for a utopia. I'm extremely disappointed, given the high amount of positive reviews and constant buzz about this book.
